Volkswagen Ordered to Recall Vehicles Over Emission Issues in South Korea

South Korea has ordered Volkswagen to recall 125,522 diesel vehicles after finding that emission test in the vehicles are manipulated.

Regulators in South Korea have also imposed a $12.3m fine on the German automaker for emissions cheating.

In September, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a notice of violation to Volkswagen saying that its four-cylinder Volkswagen and Audi diesel cars belonging to model years 2009-2015 featured software that cheated the EPA emissions standards for certain air pollutants.

Following the accusation, the company admitted to using the software and it also announced spending cuts of up to €1bn next year to cover the costs of the recalled vehicles.

The South Korean ministry found that emissions from Tiguan diesel vehicles featuring EA189 engines breached the country's emission standards when the car was not under the usual test conditions.

Associated Press cited South Korean Ministry of Environment director Hong Dong Gon as saying that the ministry is planning to investigate 30,000 other Volkswagen diesel cars which did not show signs of emissions cheating.

The ministry will investigate cars using the EA288 engines which reportedly meet the emissions standards, "Euro-5" and "Euro-6."

Volkswagen said: "We will take necessary measures based on legal procedures and requirements under the relevant laws and regulations."

Volkswagen has been complying with the legal procedures and requirements of the authorities since the scandal broke out.
