NHTSA to Test Vehicle Braking System with New Tech

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is planning to use a new test system called Strikeable Surrogate Vehicle (SSV) to test Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) systems in the US.

The SSV consists of a carbon target, which mimics the rear end of a car.

During the test, the SSV simulates a vehicle ahead of it, which is registered by the test specimen's assist system and triggers a braking or evasion maneuver.

The US NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) is expected to adopt AEB as a recommended safety technology in the assessment criteria for all new vehicles.

All of the major automakers including Volvo, Nissan, and Audi are using AEB presently along with other tech to boost passenger safety.

Currently, German crash test facility manufacturer MESSRING is using the SSV and it has already become a standard in Europe and Asia.

NHTSA development partner US based carbon fiber maker Wolf Composite Solutions has also come up with a new hybrid solution for testing which combines the SSV target with the advantages of EuroNCAP towing system from MESSRING.

Wolf Composite Solutions is expected to handling the sales and service for the "Hybrid", solution with the European original towing system and the SSV.
