Dextra Group, parent company of Dextra Lighting, has expanded its electronics facility, allowing it to become one of the first European lighting manufacturers to produce LED components in-house.
With an investment of more than £4 million over the last 12 months, Dextra has recognised that LED is becoming the light source of choice for the majority of its customers.
Following the installation of the first surface-mount technology (SMT) line last year, the company has now invested in a dedicated 12,000ft2 specialist electronics facility.
A total of four SMT production lines have now been installed in this area, which has the capacity to place half a million LED chips on cards of up to 900mm x 600mm in a single eight-hour shift.
Specialist areas for sensor assembly and other sensitive electronics have also been incorporated.
The company says these investments bring it closer to achieving complete self-sufficiency with 90 per cent of all LED cards produced on site, bringing a new level of flexibility to the production and design process. The ability to customise card designs means that exact criteria for cost, lumen output, power consumption and return on investment can be met.
