Transport for Tfl Has Obtained a Grant of Gbp5m to Buy New Vehicles in UK

Transport for London (TfL) has obtained a grant of GBP5m to buy new vehicles from Department for Transport's (DfT) Green Bus Fund in the UK.

Major share of the amount will be used to buy 90 hybrid buses, which will expand the current fleet of green buses in Europe.

TfL plans to use GBP360,000 to buy four single-deck buses that are completely powered by electric motors and will test them to assess if they can bus used for operating in the region.

London Buses operations director Mike Weston said, "We will continue to increase our hybrid bus fleet and will seek, where possible, to trial exciting developments in zero emission electric technology."

By 2016, the company expects over 1,700 hybrid buses to offer services on the streets of the capital that will represent 20% of the total bus fleet containing 8,500 buses.

Out of the total buses, 600 new diesel electric hybrid buses will be allocated for London vehicles that will decrease the CO2 emissions in the area by about 20,600t per year when operations start in 2016.

According to DfT, the remaining 1,100 hybrid buses are much cleaner, quieter and more efficient compared to their conventional diesel-powered counterparts.

Compared to conventional diesel buses, hybrid buses reduces CO2 emissions by 30% as well as offer similar percentage of fuel economy.
