Fiat Chrysler Automobiles To Offer Sensor-Fusion Technology For AEB Systems

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) said that all its future vehicles that include Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) systems will feature sensor-fusion technology.

FCA is one of the 19 automakers who agreed to install automatic emergency braking (AEB) system in all their vehicles in the US by 2022.

FCA North America head of vehicle safety and regulatory compliance said: "This decision aligns with our mission to assist drivers and help mitigate crashes.

"We will proliferate AEB through our vehicle lineup based on this robust, state-of-the-art technology."

Automatic emergency braking systems will help prevent crashes or reduce their severity by applying the brakes for the driver.

Sensor-fusion technology uses the capabilities of both radar and cameras to identify a collision. The technology automatically applies brakes after receiving input from both of them on impending collision.

"We've said it before, but it bears repeating - we are committed to the democratization of advanced safety technologies," Dahl said.

The company said that system will be included in most of the vehicle categories, including 2017 Chrysler Pacifica minivan.

The system pre-fills the vehicle's brakes and transmits audible and visual warnings for the driver to act after detecting a severe impact. It activates a brief brake application as a tactile alert if there is no response from the drive.

If the driver remains unresponsive and the frontal collision risk is imminent, braking occurs automatically to slow the vehicle and reduce an impact's severity.

However, the system may bring the vehicle to a full stop if a frontal collision appears imminent at speeds below 25 miles per hour (mph).

US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and IIHS had in September 2015 had encouraged the automakers to voluntarily agree to make automatic emergency braking in vehicles a standard feature, based on evidence that the installation prevents crashes and injuries.
