Eco-Friendly Ketchup Bottle Will Be Unveiled by Heinz Canada

HJ Heinz Canada is all set to unveil its new eco-friendly ketchup bottle later this month. The bottle is made from up to 30% plant-based material, using Coca-Cola’s PlantBottle packaging.

The new packaging is made with a process that uses sugar cane and turns the natural sugars from plant material into a key component for the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic.

Within three years, the company plans to cut down greenhouse gas emissions, solid waste, water consumption and energy use by 20%, by converting to the PlantBottle packaging.

The move, which replaces a substantial non-renewable, petroleum-based component with a renewable component, reflects the company's proposal for more environmental sustainability worldwide.

Heinz Canada president and CEO Peter Luik said the PlantBottle packaging and the company's partnership with The Coca-Cola Company provides an opportunity to advance its environmental stewardship efforts.

The 750ml Ketchup PlantBottle packaging, which is similar to traditional PET plastic has the same recyclability as the rest of the company's Ketchup lineup.

The latest move comes on the heels of a consumer research showing environment-friendly packaging is considered important by almost two-thirds of Canadian consumers.
