Granalix Launches Pomegranate Oil-Based Food Additive

Granalix BioTechnologies has commercially launched a patented pomegranate oil based food supplement which is claimed to prevent neurodegeneration diseases.

Branded as GranaGard, the food additive is produced by Supherb and is priced at $30.00.

The Israel based biotech company plans to roll out the food supplement across pharmacies in Mexico while being on the lookout for more partners to distribute it in other parts of the world.

A submicron pomegranate seed oil emulsion, GranaGard is formulated from Punicic acid, an Omega 5 lipid which constitutes 80%.

Granalix BioTechnologies founder and acting CEO Prof. Ruth Gabizon said: “In addition to its protective role in subjects at risk of neurodegenerative conditions, GranaGard is expected to be effective for general neurological wellbeing for the larger public.

“We are also currently testing GranaGard for its effect in various non-neurological diseases and as a protective agent during intense exercise."

The formulation is said to delay the onset of disease and prevent neuronal death in a model of genetic prion disease. It is also claimed to reduce disease burden of Multiple Sclerosis besides showing no signs of toxicity after long term administration.

Granalix said that the findings of the effects of the food supplement were based on mouse models.

According to the supplement maker, administration of GranaGard to a subject can reduce brain lipid oxidation which comes from increased levels of reactive oxygen species.

The reactive oxygen species have the potential of damaging cells, especially those related to the central nervous system. GranaGard is said to contain anti-oxidants which can counter the reactive oxygen species.
