The Drive-E Portfolio of Powertrains Will Be Released by Volvo Cars in Autumn 2013

Swedish automobile manufacturer Volvo Cars will launch the Drive-E portfolio of powertrains during the autumn of 2013.

Volvo to Launch New Drive-E Engines in Autumn 2013

The Drive-E range includes two four-cylinder engines, one common rail diesel and one direct-injected petrol version engines, including the diesel versions featuring the new i-Art technology, while the petrol version will come with a combination of a compressor and a turbocharger.

Volvo Car Group Powertrain Engineering vice president Derek Crabb said the company has created smaller, intelligent engines with power curves that give better driveability compared to engines with more cylinders yet deliver the fuel economy of only four cylinders.

"Our four-cylinder engines will offer higher performance than today's six-cylinder units and lower fuel consumption than the current four-cylinder generation," Crabb added.

The new Drive-E diesel engines will deliver outputs in the range of 120hp to 230hp, while the petrol versions will generate outputs between 140hp and 300hp, when mated to either a new eight-speed automatic gearbox or an improved six-speed manual transmission.

Volvo's new S60, V60 and XC60 vehicles will be launched with three engines from the new engine family including the 306hp petrol turbo T6, the 245hp T5 and the turbo diesel D4 that generates 181hp.

Additionally, the company will also introduce a new eight-speed automatic gearbox to offer better drive and fuel economy.
