CEUR Team Will Launch Solar-Powered Racing Car Evolution

The Cambridge University Eco-Racing (CEUR) Team will launch solar-powered racing car Evolution, which has been developed by a team comprising 60 students.

With a view to spreading awareness about electric vehicles, the racing car will join the fray at the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge, an endurance event to be held in Australian Outback later this year.

They are backed by Jaguar Land Rover, Marshall Group, Penso, Timeless Green, TTP and Viridian Sola. The CEUR has also secured the support of international investor BNY Mellon.

The students will aim for an impressive show in the upcoming race, dispelling concerns over the stability of the car following a crash during road testing in the previous event in 2013, Cambridge News reported.

Commenting on the race, Driver Alan Jamieson, who undergoing a PhD program in fluid mechanics at Cambridge, said: "It is 3,000km with dust, fierce cross winds, bush fires and these long road trains of carriages which, as they pass, you can feel the buffeting effect of even in a Land Rover

"We had beaten all expectations to get our vehicle Resolution to Australia in 2013 - we had designed the car from scratch and built it in a year... It was completely different to anything that had gone before; it was smaller, lighter, with an efficient array of solar cells that could position themselves towards the sun."

Evolution, which will be flagged off at University of Cambridge sports ground, is expected to blend sustainable engineering with potential of electric vehicles, a fact contributing towards creating future mainstream vehicles.

The test would be conducted at Jaguar Land Rover wind tunnel facilities as well as on the tracks at the Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire.
