Performance Food Group Announces Seafood Sustainability Assessments

Performance Food has announced that more than 92% of the imported and domestic farm-raised seafood volume in PFG brands is certified sustainable by the Global Aquaculture Alliance.

In addition, more than 97% of the fresh and frozen, wild-caught seafood in PFG brands is recognized sustainable by accredited organizations including the Marine Stewardship Council, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, and the Commission for the Conservations of Antarctic Marine Living Resources.

“We have a relentless focus on meeting the needs of our unique and diversified customer base as the foodservice industry evolves and grows,” said Jim Spatola, PFG’s SVP of Procurement.

“We believe seafood sustainability is a key component of our future success as we strengthen our relationships in the communities we serve and help preserve our environment.”

As a member of National Fisheries Institute (NFI) and the NFI Better Seafood Board, PFG aims to uphold industry principles that products are correctly labeled for weights and counts, country of origin and those products adhere to all labeling laws.

Additionally, the commitment expands that products be correctly labeled for identity and that the species are not substituted in any manner.

PFG employs DNA testing on commonly substitutable species and adds the “Species Verified” logo to the packaging of PFG seafood brands that are DNA tested. The NFI continues to provide guidance to PFG and the industry based on independent, sound science that reflects the economic, social and environmental impacts of seafood.

Through its family of leading foodservice distributors – Performance Foodservice, Vistar, and PFG Customized – Performance Food Group Company (PFG) markets and distributes approximately 150,000 food and food-related products from 71 distribution centers to over 150,000 customer locations across the United States.
