Porsche Opens New Eight-Cylinder Engine Manufacturing Plant in Germany

German automaker Porsche has opened a new 8 cylinder engine manufacturing plant at the main site in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen.

About €80m has been invested in the plant, which has a capacity to produce 200 engines per day.

The new plant, whose construction was commenced in early 2014, is situated in the western expansion zone of the main Porsche production site.

With an area of 10,000 metres2, the factory is subdivided into two levels with ground floor dedicated to the logistics and the upper floor dedicated to engine assembly.

The new facility has been designed in terms of sustainability. Porsche claims that it is the first industrial quarters in Germany to receive gold rating in its pre-certificate from the German Society for Sustainable Construction (DGNB).

The plant also features solar panels that produce 242,500 kWh of electricity per annum and reduce about 105 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

Porsche executive board chairman Oliver Blume said: "Porsche stands for sporty high-performance engines: from engine design to series production.

"We are further extending our competence in this area with the new engines. This is how we will assure our customers the driving pleasure of tomorrow and safeguard the future jobs of our employees.

“At the same time, we are creating the necessary foundation for successfully leading Porsche into the new age of electric mobility."

At the new plant, Porsche plans to produce eight-cylinder V-engines, which will be used in the new Panamera and as the carmaker mentions, requires extremely precision processing.

Several tools have been installed at the plant whose torque and speeds are electronically controlled. These adjustments can be modified at any time and they can be used at any work station.

Apart from this, Porsche also collects about 2,300 units of data from the engine after the assembly is completed and tested. Any fluctuations in quality are detected very early at the onset and are prevented taking an effect on the engine.
