Tesla to Modify Its Electric Cars to Meet China's Charging Standards

Tesla Motors is planning to modify its electric cars to meet China’s charging standards, in order to boost sales in the country by eliminating concerns over its technology incompatibility.

A national charging standard is being developed by the Chinese authorities to promote the use of electric cars, The Wall Street Journal reported.

This will also help drivers to overcome range anxiety or the fear of running out of electricity while on the road.

Tesla China country head Zhu Xiaotong said: "We will fully cooperate with the Chinese government in drafting the national charging standards as well as building public charging infrastructure."

The Chinese government said that it will not allow the construction of charging stations that do not meet the emerging Chinese standard.

Tesla is currently investing in the installation of supercharging stations across the globe which can supply 120KW of electricity and has the capacity to recharge 80% of a 85KWh Model S battery in 30 minutes. However, its charging technology is not compatible with electric cars manufactured by other companies.

Last year, BMW reached a deal with Shanghai government to build charging stations that can supply electricity for cars by other manufacturers.
