First Rapid Plug-in Charge Point Opened in Cornwall, UK

The first rapid plug-in car chargepoint, capable of charging vehicles in around 30 minutes, was flagged off as part of the Eden project in Cornwall in the UK.

The charging facility, which is among 16 being installed in the county, was opened in the presence of transport minister Andrew Jones.

Jones said: "Plug-in vehicles are cheaper to run, better for the environment and an increasingly popular choice for families and businesses. The government is investing £500 million in low emission vehicles over the next 5 years, including in chargepoints such as those at the striking location of the Eden Project.

"The new rapid chargepoint network continues our commitment to improving journeys in the south west, with a record investment in roads. This is part of our long-term economic plan to improve transport infrastructure and support jobs and opportunities in this beautiful area."

The Department for Transport (DfT) provided grants worth £765,000 for a rapid charging network in Devon and Cornwall, with a view to helping residents and visitors avail of the facility to have fast and convenient charging points.

Meanwhile, the minister went over to the new Truro Park and Ride Eastern Site, which entailed a cost of £9.6m, backed by the government's Regional Growth Fund. The stop-off point is expected to enhance bus links for passengers and connections to surrounding areas.
