Chester Medical Solutions Installed a Digital Carton Printer for Braille

Carton and leaflet manufacturer Chester Medical Solutions has installed a digital carton printer for Braille, claimed to be the first-of-its-kind in the UK.

The new device, installed in the firm's manufacturing facility in Deeside, Flintshire, allows printing of Braille dots on a carton, doing away with Braille tooling.

It deploys a 'polymer drop on demand' nozzle to execute the Braille script, which then gets UV cured.

Chester Medical's managing director David Patterson said: "This major innovation places us at the forefront of digital carton manufacture for pharmaceutical applications.

"It provides the final link in the production chain and further enhances our ability to offer a fast response and flexible service in the creation of packs that meet all international standards."

After the Braille is put in place, a vision verification system swings checks the dot presence, height and circumference. Consequently, it converts the script into readable text for verification.

The Braille font used for printing is Marburg Medium, which prescribed by European and North American standards for pharmaceutical packaging.
