Canadian Importers Are Voluntarily Recalling Oysters and Clams in Connecticut

Canadian importers are voluntarily recalling oysters and clams in Connecticut as they may have been contaminated with Vibrio parahaemolyticus, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

The products subject to the recall include, Blue point oysters or Atlantic oysters, Littleneck clams, Cherrystone clams, Oysters and Blue point oysters.

These recalled products were sold across Ontario and Quebec from 03 July 2013 to 06 August 2013, inclusively, and were also distributed across the US state of Connecticut.

The Connecticut Department of Agriculture has recalled oysters and clams from specific harvest areas, as a number of illnesses have been reported associated with the consumption of the recalled products in the US. However, no illnesses have been reported associated with the consumption of recalled products in Canada.

CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recalls, which are classified as Class 2 health hazards.

Consumption of food contaminated with Vibrio parahaemolyticus may cause vibriosis, a food borne illness. Symptoms include watery and/or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, headache, fever, and chills.
