Tata Motors Launches Tiago Hatchback in India

Tata Motors has launched Tiago, a hatchback for the Indian market after changing its original name Zica, as it was sounding similar to Zika virus.

The Indian automaker changed the name of the car to Tiago through a contest conducted on social media.

The new hatchback comes in two variants, petrol and diesel and costs about INR 320,000 and INR 394,000 respectively.

Both the petrol and diesel variants are home-grown. The petrol variant comes with a 1.2 liter Revotron engine and the diesel variant comes with a 1.5 liter Revotorq engine.

The company claims that they offer superior fuel efficiency and dynamic driving experience with multi-drive mode - City and Eco.

These driving modes are supported by an advanced engine management system (EMS).

Tiago claimed to offer a mileage of 23.8km/l for petrol variant and 27.8km/l for the diesel variant.

Other safety features in Tiago include dual front airbags, advanced 9th generation ABS with EBD and corner stability control, rear parking sensors with display on infotainment screen.

The company says that the body structure of the car has been designed to absorb energy during an impact, thus increasing safety.

Tata Motors chief executive officer and managing director Guenter Butschek said: "The TIAGO reflects our passion and commitment to bring exciting, technology driven cars into the market.

"Class leading features, advanced driving dynamics, outstanding fuel efficiency, offers a great value for a contemporary, young car."

According to Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Business Unit president Mayank Pareek said: "The TIAGO is the first car to be launched under our Made Of Great campaign and the first to embody our new IMAPCT Design language.

"This globally benchmarked car, represents the next big leap in our transformation journey. We are confident that TIAGO's strong and distinct character will make it stand out in this highly popular but immensely competitive segment."
