Ford Has Joined Hands with Australian Supplier Carbon Revolution to Enable Mass Production

US automotive giant Ford has joined hands with Australian supplier Carbon Revolution to enable mass production of carbon fiber as material to make the wheels of Mustang Shelby GT350R.

The carbon fibers not only help reduce the overall curb weight but are also said to augur well for dynamics as a decrease in unsrpung weight, those which are not backed by suspension, can alter handling and performance.

Less unsprung weight leads to convenient start and stoppage of vehicles, relieving the suspension components to some extent while rolling over broken surfaces.

Going through rigorous and high-testing settings, wheels in Ford cars have to withstand curb strikes, UV and chemical exposure, and extreme heat durability prior to moving towards production lines.

Driving away a common misconception that carbon fiber is a brittle material, the company said the wheels of Shelby GT350R are designed to be stiff, light and resilient.

Ford Performance chassis supervisor Adam Wirth said: "The GT350R wheels and tires were developed to be the most track-capable parts we've ever produced... The carbon fiber wheels reduce vehicle weight by 60 pounds compared to aluminum, yet are stiffer for better steering response.

"We believe this is a game changer for the industry... a great example of improved performance through innovation."

Track testing revealed that braking system generated rotor temperatures in excess of 900 degrees Celsius. In keeping with this, the thermal standard of the wheel was made suitable for motorsport.
