FCA Boss Sergio Marchionne Determined for GM Merger

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) CEO Sergio Marchionne is pursuing a tie-up between FCA and its US based rival General Motors, giving it ‘high priority’.

The move is aimed at reducing the number of players in the industry and it is expected to facilitate sharing of costs of building greener and more intelligent cars.

According to Marchionne, such a deal will be the best strategic option for the US based automaker which rejected the proposal earlier this year.

Marchionne did not give details of the proposal, but Reuters quoted Marchionne as saying: "GM would be the best possible strategic alternative for us and for them. General Motors does remain the ideal partner for us and we represent a not easily replaceable alternative for them."

"The implication of any tie up of that caliber would be absolutely zero on the manufacturing infrastructure of the two companies," added Marchionne.

General Motors said that it prefers to go alone, as it is in the best strategy to create value for its shareholders.

The company said that it reached the conclusion after an in-depth review of a possible merger with FCA.
