Officially Opened Its R$2.6bn ($1.5bn) Complex in Resende

Japanese automaker Nissan Motor has officially opened its R$2.6bn ($1.5bn) complex in Resende, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as part of its plan to achieve 5% market share and become the number one Japanese automotive brand in Brazil.

The Nissan Resende complex, which spans an area of 3,050,000 m2, will have a capacity to produce an estimated 200,000 vehicles and 200,000 engines each year. It features all facets of automotive production - from the stamping of sheet metal into parts to vehicle assembly and road course testing.

Currently, the new facility has a workforce of 1,500 and is expected to grow to around 2,000.

The complex will produce Nissan's "Platform V" vehicles and engines starting with Nissan March and the 1.6 16V flexfuel engine.

Nissan Chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn said the Nissan Industrial Complex of Resende is fundamental to achieving the growth objectives in Brazil, which is the fourth largest automotive market in the world and a key part for the company's development in Latin America.

"Our goal is to achieve 5 percent market share and to lead Japanese automakers in quality and customer service in Brazil by 2016," Ghosn said.

The complex has 88 robots which carry out tasks that demand more precision or could incur safety or ergonomic risks. Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGV) - small self-driven robots - move small carts of parts, making the operations safer.

The buildings feature natural illumination and ventilation systems, which lower energy consumption and have low environmental impact. Production processes also reuse water by filtering solids for recycling or proper disposal.
