John Lewis's Christmas Advertisement Is Very Popular This Year

Monty and Mabel the penguins and the CGI stars of the retailer's 2014 Christmas ad prove a popular choice this year.

John Lewis' Soft Toy Penguins Sell out Despite £95 Price Tag Anger

John Lewis’s Christmas advert mascots, Monty and Mabel plush toy penguins have sold out online, despite anger over their £95 price tag.

The stars of the retailer’s attempt to tug on the heartstrings this year have proved so popular among audiences that their plush toy counterparts sold out on the John Lewis website within hours.

The toys were tipped to be bestsellers in the lead up to Christmas by betting agency Ladbrokes, with odds on at 4/5 for the cuddly toy to sell out in any store or online before the big day arrives.

The Gloucester Citizen reports that all variations of the Monty the Penguin plush have already sold out online, despite the large version carrying a £95 price tag.

However, not all were as besotted with the plush character and star of the new advert, and those feeling frostbitten by the price soon took to Twitter to voice their opinion.

BT.com and various other social media users were quick to point out that the World Wildlife Fund offered a cuddly penguin for sponsoring a real penguin for £3 a month.

But despite the fury of some, sales continue for Monty and Mabel themed products with various pyjamas and clothing ranges following suit.

Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes, said: “Monty’s already captured the nation’s hearts and the odds suggest plenty of punters will be picking up penguins off the shelves this year.”
