Volvo Cars Is Exploring to Use Connected Car Technologies Using in-Car Data

Volvo Cars has announced at the 2015 Mobile World Congress that it is exploring to use connected car technologies using in-car data and the Volvo Cloud.

The Swedish automaker has developed Road Status technology, which is being piloted through fleet of cars in the roads of Sweden and Norway.

The company is also planning to extend the pilot fleet to 1, 000 cars.

Volvo also expects Smart cities to improve traffic flow management, which could optimise traffic lights and speed limits, and offer re-routing suggestions based on real-time traffic jam alerts.

Smart cities are also expected to provide warnings of emergency road conditions and dangerous weather, and highlight slippery road-sections in a different color when discovered by another connected car.

Volvo Car Group CIO Klas Bendrik said: "If a Volvo car detects that it is slippery on a certain stretch of road, for example, it can make other connected cars aware of this via the Volvo Cloud so they are forewarned.

"Such connected car services could deliver both personal and societal benefits by reducing the potential for accidents and lowering the cost of road maintenance by making winter road maintenance more efficient.

"Car makers have the potential to deliver real benefits to society by democratizing anonymized car data. This is something that Volvo Cars feels very strongly about."

The company also expects to connect innovative cloud-based technology with traffic management ecosystems to facilitate sharing of real-time traffic information data.
