British automotive services firm RAC has introduced its first mobile electric charging system at GreenFleet Scotland for electric vehicles facing breakdown due to lack of power.

The company has equipped a standard RAC diesel VW Transporter van with an EVRESCUE, which is a 5kW portable fast charging unit with delivery range of about 15miles in about half an hour.

RAC spokesman Tim Hartles said as the electric vehicle market develops, the need for a mobile transportable energy source is becoming more important, not only to reduce 'range anxiety', but also to provide temporary cost-effective power for electric cars.

"Whether it's at the side of a road in an emergency, or in a car showroom, portable power that is flexible, available and mobile is very much in demand so we wanted to invest in the required technology to make sure the RAC was completely ready to meet this need," Hartles said.

With the new service, RAC expects to support increase in EV adoption in UK, which currenly has over 9,000 vehicles running on electric power.

The portable recharging unit unique is said to be capable of fully recharging an electric vehicle's battery in about four hours and will offer services in the Birmingham area, which has many EVs due to its charging infrastructure.

RAC also plans to add EVRESCUE charging systems to more patrol vehicles in busy urban areas after completion of trials.
