Nikon Image Space Offers 2GB of Online Storage Space Available to Anyone

Nikon Image Space, which goes live January 28, is a new cloud-storage service that allows photographers to store or share images or video using one of two types of free accounts. The basic account, available to anyone regardless of the type of camera they own, offers 2GB of online storage space. But for those who can verify that they own a Nikon digital camera, the company is offering an account with a whopping 20GB of storage.

The 20GB account will also offer more advanced functions, including the ability to apply a password when sharing images and a function that restricts image download.

The cloud-storage concept isn't new for Nikon: the company's original offering, myPicturetown, also offered 2GB of free storage, and you could opt for additional gigabytes for an additional monthly charge. Nikon hasn't yet indicated whether it will offer paid accounts with Nikon Image Space.

Nikon joins a number of companies, including Sony and Samsung, that have created cloud-based services for photographers. Nikon says its new service will have an improved user interface and better integration with social media services such as Facebook and Twitter, for uploading and sharing photos and videos.
