German sports car manufacturer Porsche has introduced the new 918 Spyder hybrid sports car, which is claimed to be the quickest, powerful and fuel efficient model manufactured by the carmaker so far.

The new sports car is powered by a 4.6L, eight cylinder engine that generates an output of 612hp, which is coupled to an 115kW electric motor in a parallel hybrid layout, while a decoupler links it with the combustion engine.

According to the carmaker, the parallel hybrid configuration enables powering the hybrid model at the rear axle either individually by the combustion engine or electric motor or via both drives together.

Porsche's seven-speed speed dual-clutch automatic Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission assists in transferring power to the rear axle.

Additionally, the sports hybrid is equipped with another independent electric motor on the front axle that delivers 95kW of power to the front wheels at a fixed ratio and facilitates all-wheel-drive functionality for improved traction and driving dynamics.

Both the electric motors are powered by a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery, which can be charged through a new system with a plug-in vehicle charge port and enhanced recuperation potential.

The overall hybrid system generates a combined output power of 653kW and about 800Nm of torque, the carmaker claims.

Features of the new hybrid sports car include a driver-focused cabin incorporating a conventional instrument panel with a touch-sensitive panel that allows using control functions for automatic climate control system, wing adjustment, lighting and Porsche Communication Management (PCM).
