German carmaker BMW has commenced production of 2014 X5 sport activity vehicle (SAV) at its Spartanburg plant in South Carolina US.

The new SUV will be offered with three powertrain options including a petrol variant xDrive50i and two diesel versions: X5 xDrive30d and X5 M50d M Performance Automobile version.

The petrol variant V8 xDrive50i engine will generate an output of 450hp, while the xDrive30d six-cylinder in-line diesel engine produces an output of 258hp, with the final variant M50d M Performance Automobile with tri-turbo six-cylinder in-line diesel unit generating 381hp output.

All the engine units will mated to a standard eight-speed automatic gearbox incorporating the BMW EfficientDynamics technology.

According to the carmaker, the new engine is designed to trim down fuel consumption and emissions by minimising weight, optimising air guidance and engine technology.

Features include auto start stop function, ECO PRO mode, which includes coasting function and proactive driving assistant, in addition to run-flat tires as standard.

BMW claims the X5 to be the only model in its segment being offered with Active Steering as well as AdaptiveDrive, which is a blend of Active Roll Stabilization and Electronic Damping Control aimed at offering improved handling capability and ride quality.
