Ferrari to Help Alfa Romeo with Engine Development

Industry journal Automotive News Europe reports Fiat SpA is set to announce a technical cooperation between Ferrari and sister brand Maserati in the coming weeks that will see the them work together with Alfa Romeo on a range of new engines.

Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne admitted that making “engines worth wearing the Alfa badge” remained the biggest challenge in rejuvenating the brand.

“Ferrari will take a more active role in engine development for Alfa, similar to what Ferrari already did for Maserati,” Marchionne said.

Last month, Fiat announced plans to launch nine new or updated Alfa Romeo models and triple the marque’s global sales to 300,000 units by 2016. The expansion will see the launch of the Alfa Romeo 4C later this year, followed by the mid-sized Giulia sedan and wagon around 2014, and a two-seat rear-wheel-drive sports car co-developed with the Mazda MX-5 from 2015, as well as updates to the MiTo city car and Giulietta small car.

Ferrari recently worked with Maserati to develop two brand-new twin-turbocharged direct-injection petrol engines for the new-gen Quattroporte sedan: a 301kW/550Nm 3.0-litre V6 and a 390kW/650Nm 3.8-litre V8.
