Continuum Helped Coca-Cola Enterprises to Meet a Target of Using 25% rPET

The landmark comes nine months after the 15m facility was opened by former waste minister Lord Taylor of Holbeach.

Continuum is now reported to be responsible for processing more than half of the UK's bottle-grade rPET and has helped Coca-Cola Enterprises to meet a target of using 25% rPET in all its bottles by the end of last year.

The facility can process up to 40,000 tonnes of PET every year and is part of Eco Plastics' site in Hemswell, Lincolnshire that can process around 150,000 tonnes annually.

Jonathan Short, managing director of Eco Plastics, said: "To be exceeding our ramp up plan is further testament to the expertise, dedication and determination of our team." He added that reaching the 250m-bottle mark was a "great milestone".

Nick Brown, associate director for recycling at Coca-Cola Enterprises, added: "Continuum has proven to be a landmark initiative for the reprocessing industry… and is truly transforming recycling in this country.

"Its success should demonstrate to everyone, from householders to Local Authorities and policy makers, the real environmental and economic benefits of recycling and the vast potential of the GB reprocessing sector."

Continuum played a key part in Coca-Cola's efforts to recycle all of the plastic bottles used during the Olympics and Paralympics, with some 15m bottles collected.

CCE and ECO Plastics estimate that the plant will save around 33,500 tonnes of CO2 per year, the equivalent of taking over 15,715 cars off the road.
