Volvo Trucks Revealed a Plan to Commercialize DME-Powered Heavy-Duty Commercial Vehicles

Volvo Trucks has revealed a plan to commercialize dimethyl ether (DME)-powered heavy-duty commercial vehicles in North American market.

As part of its plan, the company will commence limited production of DME-powered vehicles in 2015.

The vehicles powered by DME offers energy efficiency of diesel without emitting any soot, making it a suitable alternative fuel.

High cetane number in the fuel delivers improved performance and efficiency comparable to diesel, while it can be packed densely on a truck to support long range transports, or making room for vocational equipment on the frame.

DME is a compression ignition fuel which, like diesel, needs no separate ignition mechanism.

The fuel can be handled and stored easily as it does not require cryogenic temperatures like LNG, and it can be stores like propane, with tank pressures of 75 psi.

DME technology will be available in a Volvo D13 engine which will join company's line-up of CNG-powered Volvo VNM and VNL model daycabs.

Company's I-Shift automated manual transmission will be a standard feature in DME-powered trucks.

Volvo Trucks North American Sales and Marketing president Gran Nyberg said, "With the addition of DME-powered vehicles to our previously announced CNG and LNG offering, Volvo's Blue Power line-up will offer the industry's most comprehensive approach to the developing North American alternative fuel market."

The company is also planning to introduce its LNG engine in North American market which is an integrated natural gas solution - in VNL daycabs and sleepers next year.
