Volvo Is Testing The Self-Driving Car Technology in Normal Traffic Condition in Spain

Swedish car maker Volvo is testing the self-driving car technology in normal traffic condition in a public motorway in Spain to validate its effectiveness.

During the trial, the convoy was led by a truck driven by professional driver, while four self-driven Volvo vehicles including a second truck and three cars followed the initial truck.

According to Volvo, its vehicles in the road train were equipped with safety systems which include cameras, radar and laser sensors, further facilitating to observe the lead vehicle and other vehicles on the road.

The company has also equipped in wireless communication in the self driving vehicles which will further using Ricardo autonomous control perform same operations, including accelerating, braking and turning, as the leader.

Volvo revealed that the cars, at a speed of 85kph (53mph) drove for nearly 200km (124 miles) in one day along a motorway outside Barcelona in Spain.

The initiative is being tested under the Safe Road Trains for the Environment (SARTRE) project which is part of European Commission-funded joint venture led by Ricardo UK.

Volvo said that the project was aimed at delivering enhanced comfort for drivers, further facilitating them to perform other actions while driving and was also to enhance traffic safety, lessen environmental impact.
