British Cheese Imports Were Banned From China This Year

China has lifted the temporary ban imposed on the imports of British cheese in April this year.

A ban was imposed following complaints from food inspectors on hygienic standards at an undisclosed dairy in the UK.

The officials, who had visited dairy plants, were dissatisfied with the maintenance, chemical storage, raw milk transport temperatures and air sanitization.

The ban was lifted 5 June, allowing UK cheese producers to export to China, subject to passing the usual local authority checks.

DEFRA said, "The Chinese market is vital for the UK with exports of food, feed and drink worth GBP257m (US$431.3m) last year. We appreciate the Chinese authorities' help and support to resolve this quickly."
