The expansion involves addition of 25 new robots and overhauling the body and general assembly lines.

Work on retooling the vehicle assembly facility commenced and the plant is expected to resume operations in two weeks.

Tesla Motors spokesman Simon Sproule told Bloomberg by phone, "This represents the single biggest investment in the plant since we really started operations and enables us for higher volumes.

"It gets us ready to build X and to do it on the same line as the S."

Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk said earlier that the company is expected to deliver around 35,000 Model S sedans this year.

At the end of the first quarter, the automaker was producing approximately 700 units of Model S in the US. It plans to ramp up production to 1,000 units.

The company is also planning to commence production of its Model X sport-utility vehicle later this year.
