Honda has called other automakers to join in an industry wide third-party testing of Takata airbag inflators to fix the issue as soon as possible.

The company is encouraging automakers to engage in independent engineering analysis to test the airbag inflators.

Apart from automakers, Honda has also asked Takata to support the initiative by provide the necessary testing data.

Honda North America executive vice president Rick Schostek said: "We believe that the industry can achieve greater results by sharing information and putting its collective efforts behind the same objective third party testing program.

"Honda continues to quickly address the needs and concerns of our customers, and this industry-wide initiative will bring additional energy and focus to this effort."

The company recently recalled around 200,000 vehicles fitted with the faulty airbags bringing a total of 5,051,364 vehicles according to Car and Driver.

It also came under scrutiny by US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for underreporting the death mainly related to faulty air bags manufactured by Takata.

Takata airbags could rupture in case of an accident and release sharp metals which could add to the injury of the passengers in case of an accident.
