Hyundai Motor Is Aiming to Recall 20,300 Santa Fe Vehicles Due to Front Axle Problems

South Korea based automaker Hyundai Motor is planning to recall 20,300 units of its Santa Fe Sport crossover vehicles in the US, over potential problems with front axle.

The recall affects 2013 model year Hyundai Santa Fe Sport sports utility vehicles (SUV) powered by 2.4L engines and having front-wheel drive, and manufactured from 13 July 2012 to 12 March 2013.

About 300 units of the SUVs are expected to be recalled from Puerto Rico, while the remaining vehicles belong to the US.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the vehicles face a manufacturing issue that may result in the fracture of the right shaft of front axle.

The fracture may cause loss of power to the wheels and also lead to rollaway in case the parking brake is not applied, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

The manufacturer is claimed to have received 60 warranty claims and seven customer complaints regarding the issue, but no reports of any accidents or injuries.

The recall is expected to start in August 2013, under which the manufacturer is anticipated to replace the front axle shaft assembly.
