Baosteel Successfully Rolled The World's Thinnest Ultrahigh Strength Steel for Cars

Recently, Baosteel successfully rolled the world's thinnest ultrahigh strength steel for cars. Its thickness was only 0.5mm, which was comparable to kraft paper; the strength reached 980 MPa, which rivaled commonly used submarine steel. At present, this product has been delivered to the users to carry out the relevant application tests, which will be firstly applied in certain types of domestic cars in the future.

In recent years, with the further strengthening of people's environmental protection consciousness and the increasingly prominent energy issues, lightweight car industry has been driven by the current trend. The reduction in the weight of car body is an effective way to reduce the fuel consumption of cars and reduce emissions. Ultrahigh strength steel has been proved to be the most economically feasible materials for realizing lightweight cars, which is mainly used in the structural and security components of cars, can further reduce weights of car body, improve passive safety and cost efficient capability.

At the beginning of this year, when receiving the requests from users, Baosteel officially started the manufacture trial work for cold rolled ultrahigh strength steel with the limited thin specification of 0.5 mm. Since the products with thin specifications and high strength had exceeded the manufacturing capacity of the in-plant equipments, the production, marketing and research teams for car sheet cooperated, optimized production process, rolling specification, roll system and so on. After trial production for six times, it ultimately made a success and was firstly tested that the mechanical properties were qualified.

Energy conservation, security and environmental protection have become three main themes of the automobile industry development, and the lightweight car has become the development trend of worldwide automobile industry. Further thinning and enhancing the strength of automobile steel materials is needed for industry development. Baosteel successfully rolled cold rolled ultrahigh strength steel with the limited thin specification, further promoted the technical strength of the enterprise, at the same time, contributed to accumulating the experience of producing ultra-thin specification of steel with ultrahigh strength, laying the foundation of providing materials for deepening technical reserves of lightweight automobile in the future.
