Nissan Motor to Suspend Production at Its St. Petersburg Plant in Russia

Japanese automaker Nissan Motor is planning to temporarily suspend production at its St. Petersburg plant in Russia due to fall in sales of its products in the country.

The production will be suspended between 16th March and 31st March.

Reuters cited a company spokeswoman as saying that Nissan will stop hiring new resources in the country and will not extend any temporary contracts.

The automaker manufactures X-Trail, Murano, Teana and Pathfinder models at its St. Petersburg plant, and the production line includes other models at factories owned by top Russian automaker Avtovaz.

Nissan and Renault SA jointly owns majority stake in Avtovaz.

The decision was prompted by fall in Russian currency value and fall in car sales to 38% in February when compared to the same time period last year.
