Republic Added 79 Trucks Powered by Compressed Natural Gas to Its Fleet in Indianapolis

Republic Services Inc. has added 79 trucks powered by compressed natural gas to its fleet in Indianapolis, the refuse hauler announced.

Republic has installed two fueling stations in Indianapolis, and the CNG stations will permit trucks to be refueled during off-peak hours, the company said.

The trucks, which replaced diesel-powered units, are in service, Republic said.

“With these new trucks, we are reducing ozone-forming emissions to levels equal to removing 395 automobiles off local roads this year,” said Travis Simpson, president of Republic’s Indianapolis-area operations. He added that 70% of the local fleet will be powered by CNG within the next year.

Republic operates more than 1,400 CNG vehicles and 26 natural-gas fueling stations nationwide. About 50% of all vehicles the company purchased in 2013 were powered by the fuel.
