Export of Textiles and Garments From Sri Lanka Increased by 9.4% in 2014

The export of textiles and garments from Sri Lanka increased by 9.4 per cent to US$ 4.929 billion in 2014, compared to exports of $4.508 billion made in 2013, according to the data from the Economics Research Department of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

The 9.4 per cent growth rate registered by the textiles and garment exports was greater than 6.5 per cent and 7 per cent growth rates witnessed by Sri Lankan industrial exports and total exports during the year, the data showed.

Textiles and clothing accounted for 59.75 per cent of Sri Lankan industrial exports and 44.34 per cent of all exports made by Sri Lanka in 2014.

On the other hand, the import of textiles and textile articles by Sri Lanka grew by 13.8 per cent to $2.327 billion in 2014, as against imports of $2.045 billion made in the previous year.

The increase in imports of textiles and textile articles shows expansion of garment manufacturing in the island country.
