Ginneries in Pakistan received 13.39 million bales of cotton as on April 15, 2014, according to the consolidated statement of cotton arrivals in factories of Pakistan, prepared by the Pakistan Cotton Ginners’ Association (PCGA), using data collected with joint cooperation of All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) and the Karachi Cotton Association (KCA).

According to the fortnightly report, 13.387 million bales of cotton were pressed by ginners as on April 15, 2014, of which, 12.829 million bales were sold, leaving an unsold stock of 557,469 million bales of ginned cotton.

More than 12.436 million bales of cotton were purchased by domestic textile mills in Pakistan, while another 393,754 bales were sold to exporters. The Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) has not procured cotton so far during the ongoing cotton season.

In Punjab province, which is the main cotton growing region in the country, over 9.63 million bales of cotton reached ginneries by April 15, of which, 9.628 million bales were pressed, leaving an unginned stock of 2,480 cotton bales. Majority of the bales were sold to local textile mills, and only 120,198 bales were sold to exporters, according to the data.

In Sindh province, almost all of the 3.76 million bales of cotton received were pressed by the ginners, and 3.571 million bales were sold, leaving an unsold stock of 187,686 bales with the ginners. Textile mills bought 3.298 million bales of cotton, while another 273,556 bales were sold to exporters.

Only 14 ginning factories, all in Punjab, are now operational, which shows that cotton arrival is nearly complete in the Sindh region, while some quantity of arrival can be expected in Punjab.

Last month, during the third meeting of Pakistan’s Federal Committee on Cotton, the production target for the 2014-15 season was fixed at 15.1 million bales of 170 kg each. At the meeting, it was informed that despite several challenges faced by the cotton sector of country, the target of 15.1 million bales was set to push all concerned departments to work towards achieving the goal and overcome the issues.
