Guala Closures Looking to Strengthen Presence in South African Market

Metal Closures is based in Cape Town and produces aluminium closures for wines, spirits and other beverages.

The €410m-turnover Guala, which is the world’s biggest producer of caps for the wine and spirit industry, has begun the process of buying the metal closures division of MCG Industries, which produces plastic and metal closures as well as plastic injection moulded packs.

The transaction is subject to the approval of the South African Competition Commission, which Guala said it expects to be given in the last quarter of this year.

Marco Giovannini, chairman and chief executive of Guala Closures Group, said: “We have been looking to strengthen our presence in the fast-growing sub-Saharan African market, the only one that was missing from our portfolio, for a while.

“This acquisition is a further step in the strategy of consolidating our core business – not only does it give us access to other African countries, but it means we can add Stellenbosch to the Barossa and Napa Valleys in our list of Guala Closures locations.”
