Plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) sales are expected to reach about 1.8 million units by 2020 in major cities of the US, a report by the Pike Research.
The Electric Vehicle Geographic Forecasts report revealed that the PEV sales will depend on the availability of the models and charging facility.
Pike Research senior research analyst Dave Hurst said that more than a quarter of all annual US PEV sales will be in the top five metropolitan areas for PEV sales - New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and Portland.
"But thanks to a combination of positive attitudes towards green driving, high fuel prices, and state government support, California metropolitan statistical areas will account for more than one in five PEVs sold," Hurst added.
The report forecasts that yearly PEV sales will reach to 400,073 units in the US, while 107,146 units are expected to be sold in Canada by 2020.
According to the report, electric vehicle acceptance is linked strongly linked to the availability of PEV models as well as the accessibility of charging infrastructure.
