Twitter's Periscope Celebrates 200m Live Streams in Year One

It seems fair to say the Twitter-owned Periscope live streaming app is one of the solitary shining lights for the struggling social network.

The start-up is celebrating a year since a full consumer launch by revealing some mind-blowing numbers.

In a post on Medium, the Periscope team announced it has facilitated more than 200 million live streams.

Viewers are spending the equivalent of 110 years watching those videos on iOS and Android every single day.

Since launching on March 26 2015, Periscope has added landscape support, web profiles, the ability to browse by map and to skip ahead in replays.

Periscope streams have also been become available within Twitter feeds, while the firm also added GoPro support earlier this year. It was also named Apple’s App of the Year in 2015 after launching for the new Apple TV.

The post reads: "For everyone who joined us along the way, we hope this reaffirms that you are a part of something bigger. Thank you for making Periscope a vibrant global community– it means everything to us."

The service has risen dramatically since its acquisition and subsequent launch by Twitter, eclipsing Meerkat as the preeminent live streaming service.

Facebook has attempted to counter by outing the Live Video platform, which had only been available to VIPs until rolling out to the public recently.
