About 9% of All Cars Will Be Self-Driven in Two Decades

In two decades, about 9 percent of all cars will be self-driven, according to a forecast published this week by auto industry group IHS Automotive.

IHS believes that although no such cars are yet available for consumers, they will be in 2025. At that time, IHS expects global sales of autonomous cars will be about 230,000, less than 1 percent of total car sales.

By 2035, however, IHS exepects the number to reach 11.8 million, making up about 9 percent of projected car sales.

Most of these sales will be in markets like the U.S., Europe and Japan. The pace of growth for self-driving cars will exceed that of electric cars, which have been slowed by the high cost of batteries.
