The Top-Five Contract Notebook PC Assemblers Posted Earnings of NT$22.2 Billion

Taipei,Sept.19,2012(CENS)--The top-five contract notebook PC assemblers in Taiwan,Compal Electronics Inc.,Quanta,Inventec Corp.,Wistron Corp.,and Pegatron Corp.,

posted earnings of NT$22.2 billion(US$740 million)in the first half,of which Quanta Computer Inc.accounted for about 50%.

Of the top-5,Compal registered the highest operating margin of 1.7%in the first-half,followed by 1.5%for Quatna,0.68%for Inventec,1.26%for Wistron,and 1.16%for Pegatron.

Quanta registered earnings of NT$11.1 billion(US$369.6 million)or about 49%of total earned by the top-five players in the first six months,with operating margin growing 0.1 percentage point year-on-year(YoY)to 1.5%,driven by the higher margins of about 30%shipments of non-notebook PC products.

Ray Chen,president of Compal,says a possible integration in the local notebook PC industry may occur,with insiders predicting Quanta,holding NT$379.8 billion(US$12.66 billion)in cash,to be the most powerful party to carry out mergers if so desired.

Quanta has more cash than its peers,even more than NT$178.4 billion(US$5.9 billion)held by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp.(TSMC),the largest semiconductor company in Taiwan.According to Quanta`s balance sheet,the firm`s cash hit the record high of NT$445.3 billion(US$14.8 billion)in the first quarter,up 68.8%from NT$263.8 billion(US$8.8 billion)in the fourth quarter of 2011,with the firm wishing to keep ample cash in the past one year to cope with uncertainties amid the fluctuating global economy.

Quanta reported more than NT$20 billion(US$666.7 million)yearly revenues,except registered earnings of NT$18.6 billion(US$619.7 million)in 2010.
