ARM on Thursday Formed a Group with Other U.K.Companies

ARM on Thursday formed a group with other U.K.companies to create a reference design on how smart devices with Internet access should be deployed in coming years.

ARM said 50 billion intelligent devices with Internet access would by deployed by 2020,and the group's intent is to harness the power of the Internet to help manage things like energy, natural resources, environment or health care.Smart devices and sensors are already being deployed to gather data, and such data could be used to more effectively collect and analyze data.

The industry group, which has no name yet, includes companies such as AquaMW,AlertMe,Enlight and Neul, which provide software and hardware that helps collect and assess data, which could help predict future events and improve operational efficiency while reducing environmental impact.

For example,Enlight delivers a system that provides a more intelligent way to time the usage of street lights. That helps the lights remain on when needed while reducing the environmental impact.Neul delivers tools for more efficient use of idle wireless spectrum and AlertMe offers smart meters to tracks energy usage.

ARM makes processors that are used in embedded chips that can be used to collect and track data. The latest product is the Cortex-M0+processor,which was announced in March, and is designed for use in medical devices, smart meters, environmental sensors and other devices.

The launch of the UK group comes a day ahead of the Olympics, which start on July 27 in London.
