Apple: Climate Change Is Our Greatest Challenge

At today's Apple event, the company talked about the growing threat of climate change, and its strides in tackling the issue.

Lisa Jackson, Apple’s VP of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, turned up on stage to discuss how important an issue climate change is for Apple.

"Just like everything we do at Apple, when we think about the environment, we think about innovation," Jackson told press at today's conference in Cupertino, California.

"We think there’s no greater challenge in the world than our changing climate," she continued. "The time for action is right now."

"Our goal is to become 100% renewable in 100% of our operations worldwide," the environment VP added. "That’s all of our offices, all of our retail stores."

So how is Apple's progress so far? According to Jackson, currently 93% of the company's offices worldwide run on renewable energy.

What's more, 100% of Apple offices and stores in the United States and China are now 100% powered by renewable energy. In fact, that's true across 23 countries around the world.

Jackson specifically cited Singapore as an example of a country where Apple has made significant improvements to its operations.

"In Singapore, where there’s not enough room to put solar panels on the ground, we looked up," said Jackson, revealing that Apple put solar panels on 800 rooftops across its Singapore offices, making Apple operations in the country 100% renewable.

Apple also revealed that "99% of our packaging comes from paper that is recycled or is coming from sustainably managed forests."
