Adapteva Says It Is Possible to Open up The Potential of Parallel Computing to Everyone

Adapteva, the parallel processing company, believes it is possible to open up the potential of parallel computing to everyone and it has launched a project to create a low cost supercomputer design called Parallella. It is looking for backers for the project on the Kichstarter website.

The aim of the project is to create a parallel processing platform that is open, easy to use and costs less than$100.It shares similar goals as the Raspberry Pi embedded computer.

"Inspired by great hardware communities like Raspberry Pi and Arduino,we see a critical need for a truly open,high-performance computing platform that will close the knowledge gap in parallel programming,"said Adapteva.

Over 400 backers have already pledged over$50,000 for the project. All architecture and SDK documents will be published on the web as soon as the kickstarter project is funded. The Parallella platform will be based on free open source development tools and libraries.Target cost of the Parallella computer is below$100.The Parallella platform is based on the Epiphany multicore chips developed by Adapteva,a four-year old start-up.

The Epiphany chips consists of a scalable array of simple RISC processors programmable in C/C++connected together with a fast on chip network within a single shared memory architecture.
