LED Lighting Demand Is Likely to Begin to Increase Significantly Along with Expected

If the global economy rebounds smoothly, global LED lighting demand is likely to begin to increase significantly along with expected improvement in performance-cost ratio for LED lighting devices as early as the second half of 2013 rather than in 2014 as originally expected, according to chairman Lee Biing-jye for Taiwan-based LED epitaxial wafer and chip maker Epistar.

Due to continued technological improvements and price drops, performance-cost ratios of LED lighting devices are expected to rise from 700-800lm/US$ in the fourth quarter of 2012 to over 1,000lm/US$ in 2013. LED lighting penetration in Japan has been the highest around the world and demand for commercial LED lighting and from the government sector is expected to continue to grow in 2013, Lee said.

There will be significant demand for LED lighting in 2013, but price competition among Taiwan- and China-based makers will increase and unhealthy makers will be forced out of the market, chairman David Su for Taiwan-based Lextar Electronics indicated.

Lextar has successfully tapped Japan's LED lighting and backlight market, with shipments to Japan accounting for 40% of its total LED lighting shipments, Su noted. Lextar has become a supplier for Panasonic, Toshiba and Mitsubishi, the three largest Japan-based LED product vendors, Su said. In addition, Lextar expects to obtain orders for LED lighting products and backlight units from new Japan-based clients in 2013.
