In just the last few years, LED performance has accelerated quickly and a wave of new commercial, industrial and institutional LED fixtures has been introduced. Market research available from Global Information Inc. estimates the 2012 North American Enterprise LED Lighting market at $630 million in annual revenues. The market is growing at a rate of 40% a year through 2016 and will exceed $1 billion in 2013. Major advances in LED technology over the past few years have led to brighter LED devices that are less expensive to produce. However, this has also led to an over-supply situation as LED count in devices is falling fast and unit prices are falling even faster.

2012 LEDs

While an over-supply situation is having a major impact in high volume consumer applications, it will lead to greater growth in applications using low and mid power LEDs for solid state lighting and displays. Demand for LED backlight unit (BLU) display systems is still growing; however, consumption of LED chips is having great difficulty in keeping up, as fewer LEDs are needed to realize a BLU than in previous generations. This is thanks to high-brightness (HB) LEDs and LED configurations, such as new "edge-lit" displays. In the mobile market LED backlights are now often being replaced by OLEDs and the automotive market is also reducing the number of LEDs used in headlights. Even so, it is expected that the general LED industry will see very strong growth over the next few years as governments and businesses alike look for ways to reduce their energy consumption and increasingly turn to solid-state lighting for their needs.

Enterprise LED 2012: Commercial and Industrial Market Trends, Opportunities & Leading Companies

During the last decade, the $11.4 billion lighting market has grown slowly, with the overall market landscape remaining unchanged. General Electric, Philips and Sylvania continue to dominate the ballast and lamp component market, based on a standardized set of interchangeable products. Enterprise customers have come to understand an established set of lighting products, vendors and distributors and today consider most products as commodities.

Status of the LED Industry

New forecast data from GII partner publisher Yole Développement estimates the market for packaged LED will reach $11.4 billion in 2012, and will peak to $17.1 billion by 2018. Growth will be driven both by the Display (LCD TV) and General Lighting applications until massive adoption of LEDs in lighting. From 2014, the third growth cycle of the LED business will accelerate with the General Lighting application representing more than 50% of the overall packaged LED business.
