Chile's Steel Consumption in Q1 of This Year,Decreasing by 9% Year on Year

According to data released by Chilean steel institute (Icha), Chile’s steel consumption totaled 663,000 tons in the first quarter of this year, decreasing by 9% year on year. Juan Pablo Silva, Icha's economist said that the decreased steel consumption was caused by high inventories and lower investments. In the first quarter of this year, the country’s domestic shipments totaled 360,000 tons, falling by 20% year on year. However, the imports rose by 10% to 303,000 tons. The consumption of steel long products totaled 372,000 tons, decreasing by 4%; those of steel flat products were at 291,000 tons, falling by 14%, both compared to those in a month ago. Meanwhile, Icha expected Chile’s steel consumption would decrease by 5% in 2013.
