Fitbit Blaze and Alta Sell More Than a Million Units Each in First Weeks on Sale

The Fitbit Blaze and Alta fitness wearables have sold more than a million units apiece in their first few weeks on sale.

The Blaze reached the milestone a month after going on sale, while the Alta notched up the figure in just three weeks.

The Blaze is Fitbit's fitness watch, though it stops short of calling it a smartwatch. At just £159, it's not going to challenge the Apple Watch in terms of functionality. But keeping it simple is obviously working for Fitbit, as these sales figures attest.

The Alta costs just £99, which is impressive given that it looks more like a piece of jewellery than a fitness band. It knows when you're exercising and records your stats, so you don't need to tell it when you're going for a run, for example. And it notifies you when you've been sitting still too long.

Fitbit's share price rose 13.1 per cent after the news was announced. This follows a disastrous few months for the company's share price: when it was clear that the Blaze wasn't a true rival to the Apple Watch – as onlookers expected it would be – the share price dropped 18 per cent.

The share price also suffered in the face of a lawsuit with Jawbone.

At its lowest, the share price was around $13, but now it's climbed back to over $15. Hopefully these sales figures will help steady the good ship Fitbit somewhat.
